BE A VITAL LINK IN THE
CHAIN OF SURVIVAL
Life-threatening conditions are ‘time
critical’ and the importance of early intervention is absolutely
paramount if we are to improve the chances of survival for people who
are in cardiac arrest.
More than 300,000 people have heart
attacks and over 110,000 die of heart problems in England
every year – 50,000 of these people are under the age of 75. In Essex chest pain and other heart-related
conditions account for 10% of all 999 calls.
Research shows that early
defibrillation (electric shock therapy to re-start a failing heart) is
the most important factor affecting the survival of patients in cardiac
arrest. The first few minutes of collapse are vital and early CPR
(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
and defibrillation can greatly improve a patient’s chance of survival.
With each precious minute that passes survival rates
decline by 10%.
